MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Learning another language provides us with the skills to:

• communicate with people in other countries
• learn about other cultures
• develop a more global outlook
• travel and experience other countries for leisure with the ability to understand and integrate
• travel and communicate effectively for business purposes
• have an enhanced skills set which is so essential in an increasingly competitive job market  

German French and Spanish are three of the most sought after languages by UK employers with the largest number of job opportunities available. At Barnwell, we aim to equip students with the best possible skills for the job market and we offer students the chance to study a combination of 2 of the following languages: French, German and Spanish throughout Years 7 to 8 and choose one or more as GCSE options from Year 9 onwards.

There are several extra activities for KS3 students including MFL Club / MFL Clinic Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes, Spanish for beginners after school on Tuesdays, as well as our Year 7 Trip to Le Touquet in France.  

It is always useful for students to have a small bilingual dictionary at home to assist with homework tasks and additional learning, but there are also free online dictionaries available and many useful websites, which can support your child’s learning:
