Textile Technology

Year 7

They will learn how to use textile equipment correctly and how to use the electric sewing machine.

They will learn about the original properties of fabrics.

They will design and make a hand puppet following correct design procedures.

Year 8

Students to review the correct use of equipment and sewing machine with the textile room.

They will learn about colour and its use to create moods, texture and feel of an item.

Students will learn about the different ways of decorating fabrics and then to do a variety of samples using embroidery, quilting, appliqué, fabric paints, pens, crayons, tie and dye, batik.

They will learn about industrial practices and how fabric is coloured in industry e.g. using CAD/CAM.

The students will use their knowledge to design and make a pencil case from material the students have decorated.

Year 9

The students will review the correct use of equipment and sewing machines within the textile room.

They will learn about embroidery and quilting.

They will then go on to design and make an educational toy using all the skills and techniques they have learnt.

 

AQA GCSE: Design and Technology: Textile Technology

Aim

To encourage candidates to demonstrate fully their design and technology capability which requires them to combine skills with knowledge and understanding in order to design and make quality products within Textiles.

Assessment

The course comprises of an external exam that has 40% of the final mark. The paper is of two hours duration for foundation tier and two and a half hours duration for higher tier.

A coursework project lasting 40 hours absorbs 60% of the marks. The coursework project is internally assessed and externally moderated. Both written and practical work has to be shown within the coursework project.
