Business
Business is taught as an optional subject at Key Stage 4 and further progression of subject is also provided at Key Stage 5 at Barnwell School .
GCSE Business Studies (Year’s 10 and 11)
The GCSE Business studies course is taught at Key stage 4 and comprises of the following sections of work:
- Human Resources
- Business Activity
- Marketing
- Finance
- Production
This course is made up of 25% coursework and 75% external examination and is worth one GCSE. The coursework is based on the Marketing section of work for this program of study.
GCSE Applied Business (Year’s 10 and 11)
GCSE Applied Business is also offered at Key stage 4 and has two coursework units and one externally assessed unit of work:
- Investigating Business
- People and Business
- Business Finance
This course awards two GCSE’s to students and is also directly linked to the Young Apprenticeship Scheme where students spend an allocated period of time placed in industry to see first hand how businesses operate. The same students also attend North Hertfordshire College to study a Communications course to provide them with further skills that employers are looking for.
BTEC First Certificate in Business (Year 12)
The BTEC Diploma in Business provides an insight into business for students who are returning to the sixth form, whether they have studied business previously or not. This course consists of three units of work, which is all coursework based, and enables students to gain two GCSE’s.
GCE Applied Business (Year’s 12 and 13)
Year 12 delivery:
• Unit 1: Investigating People at Work
• Unit 2: Investigating Business
• Unit 3: Investigating Marketing
Year 13 delivery:
• Unit 8: Business Development
• Unit 9: Managing and Developing People
• Unit 10: Marketing Decisions
This two year program consists of visits to the main resources library to support research and being placed in industry to ensure full coverage of the Managing and Developing unit of work.
Young Apprenticeship in Business Administration
The Young Apprenticeship allows motivated and able 14-16 year olds to study for vocational qualifications, not just in the classroom but in college, with training providers and in the workplace too. In year 10 students study Business Administration at college for one afternoon per week, whilst undertaking a GCSE in Business Studies and an ICT qualification in school. During year 11 students undertake 50 days of work experience with a local employer, gaining valuable skills and experience for their future.
