Dixons Challenge 2006

A taste of ways in which extended schools has impacted on students and parents at Barnwell School

  • Extended schools are all about offering increased opportunities to children and at Barnwell School we have employed a specialist Basketball/athletics coach who has opened sport up to many children who have never participated before.
  • Working in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire we have offered art & design days to students and even had some year 10 students achieve a bronze art award. Our musical students have taken part in a talent show in aid of Oxfam.
  • Young Carers groups have been set up to offer support and encouragement but most importantly some relaxation and fun for children who are young carers.
  • Extended schools have also increased training opportunities for staff to help children by providing free speech and language, ADHD and PSHE training.
  • All students and parents have access to a free confidential counselling service provided by Relate.
  • Barnwell School offers a comprehensive programme of adult learning, parenting and family learning throughout the year.
  • On the East Campus we have a lovely community room, with computers, child’s play area, kitchen and social area for parents and community groups to use.
  • The wide range of after school clubs available and enhancement of child care provision in feeder schools allows greater flexibility for many parents
